Jordan Spieth won 11 PGA Tour events and 14 times worldwide, including three majors by the age of 23. That is some Tiger Woods level type of winning. The PGA Tour had found its new star.
In 2017, he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am by four strokes, the Travelers Championship with the ridiculous walk-off birdie from a greenside bunker and The Open Championship with the iconic “Go Get That” moment after burying a bomb. Any one of those moments would make for a great season and even a great career and this dude reeled them off in a two-month stretch.
Hard to believe that the 2017 Open Championship was his last win. Jordan Spieth has not won a professional golf tournament in over 1,000 days. Just a crazy thought. What’s even crazier is that he is only 26!
Well, it looks as though the three-month break served him well. Before COVID he was T55, MC, T9, T59 & T58. Entering Thursday’s opening round, he had not broke 70 on tour in eight rounds (back-to-back tourney’s).
He opened with back-to-back 65s this week and has ensured himself a late afternoon tee time. Not every five-under round is the same. Thursday’s round was neat and tidy whereas this morning’s was a dizzy bat turn after your 10th beer of the day.
If today is what we’re going to get from the new Spieth it was quite a ride and I’m ALL IN.
He had a stretch on the front nine (his back because he started on 10) where he went Birdie – Birdie – DOUBLE BOGEY – Bogey – Birdie – Birdie.
This round was a trip.
He was pouring putts in from all over the course and then four-putted on No. 3. Three of those putts came from TWO FEET! If you were playing a match with someone these would been gimmies. Seriously, look at this play-by-play….
He bounced back with two straight birdies before closing with three somewhat uneventful pars (he nearly chipped in bird on No.9).
You know he’s feeling it when he’s talking a mile a minute to his ball. No one on tour talks to their ball as much as Spieth. I love that. Rory McIlroy has swagger when he’s feeling it, Tiger has his earth shattering fist pumps, JT has his unreal club twirls and Spieth has yapping at his ball to GET DOWN or GO HARD.
We’ll see what the weekend has in store for the Texan. Either way it will make for good TV.
