Harold Varner III – or “HV3” as his close friends (sup?) call him – is everything I aspire to be in a golfer. Every once in a while he makes a splash in the golf world, usually on social media, and his name pops up.
This time, he made a splash by being the leader in the clubhouse going into the weekend at the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial CC in Fort Worth. Watching him this week, and every week, is nothing short of a treat. The guy LOVES golf. He loves the game. He loves the people. And he shows it – if you’ve got a few minutes, this is a fun watch:
So many pros out there keep everything so tight to the vest, you rarely get a glimpse at who they actually are. Not HV3. The emotions are always on his sleeve, and they’re basically always positive.
Oh, and this week he did some pretty awesome stuff on the course. 18 greens in regulation in the first round. Yeah – every hole. That led to an opening round 63 (-7).
Round 2? Well, HV3 opened with a triple bogey. Not ideal. If that’s me, I don’t have a shot at breaking 90 that day. Crack open the beers because the golf is over. Instead Varner fought back and ended up shooting 4-under to take the 36-hole lead at 11-under.
Saturday didn’t go as planned, but was still interesting. Nothing like carding a birdie on the first hole, then making 16 pars and a bogey the rest of the way. Tough break.
Sunday left something to be desired, with HV3 shooting 2-over and finishing T19. But I still love him anyway and can’t wait to see him get his first TOUR win. I’ll be somewhere celebrating with a Bud Light:
Oh and he’s playing world-class golf with this as his putter:
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, HV3! Love it.
