2020 Travelers Championship Preview

WE ARE BACK! Coming off the heels of another exciting finish, the PGA Tour heads to Cromwell, Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. This event normally falls after the US Open and in recent years has drawn big names and lots of weekend movement/excitement.

This week’s event takes place at TPC River Highlands. If you haven’t already, check out the piece from CWalks on the course. That asshat got to chunk it up around that place last week.

The Field

Once again the field stacked with NINE of the TOP-10 players in the world in the field! NINE!

With such a stacked field we have plenty of firepower on Thursday and Friday with star-studded groups.

Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau & Phil Mickelson
These three are going to hit bombs all over the place and the PGA Tour knows it. Bryson tried to DRIVE THE GREEN on the 420-yard 17th hole on Tuesday. HE IS AN ANIMAL.

John Rahm, Chez Reavie & Webb Simpson
Lots of interesting things with this group. Reavie won the event last year, Webb won last week and playing arguable the best golf of anyone not named Daniel Berger on tour. The wild man Rahmbo can move to #1 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) for the first time in his career with a win.

Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa & Jordan Spieth
DJ had a birthday this week so hopefully he’s not still hungover. He’s dropped out of the top-5 in the OWGR for the first time in his career. Morikawa had that heartbreaking loss in the playoff at Colonial, but he has made the cut in all 22 of his PGA Tour starts. Spieth is like the ex you back slide with over and over again. I can’t quit you, Jordan. Who needs drugs when you can watch Spieth play golf.

Tourney History

Bubba Watson has won here three times and the first event was held in 1952! Pretty crazy to think the Travelers is older than The Players Championship and The Memorial. Jim Furyk famously shot a 12-under-par 58 here on Sunday in 2016 to move from T70 to fifth.

WHO DO WE HAVE WINNING IT ALL

Steve: This is the week, guys. This is the week. (I said it last week, but I really mean it this week. I’m going Rory McIlroy. He’s going to eat this place up. My promise to you is that I will not pick anyone else until McIlroy wins. I have -18 as the winning score.

CWalks: I’m going with Brooks this week. I have been absolutely terrible picking winners. Like not even close, so whoever I pick you should probably go against me. However. I think this course layout is perfect for brook’s game. His length is really going to shrink this course down and he’s going to have a lot of opportunities to score.  Last week he put on a really good performance and he was throwing darts during the weekend.  I think it’s going to continue and expect him to be in contention coming down the stretch on Sunday.

Foster: I went on a deep dive here and tried to channel my inner-Scientist. My pick this week is Patrick Cantlay. Three reasons why: It’s his first tourney back from break; he previously held the course record of 60 that he shot when he was 19; and he loves Bobby Weed courses (River Highlands was remodeled by Weed, and TPC Summerlin was designed by Weed, where Pat has finished 1st, 2nd & 2nd since 2018). -19 wins it for the California kid.
