While Dustin Johnson took home the win this past weekend at River Highlands, the show may have been stolen by Will Gordon, who earned a special temporary membership exemption to play on next week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.
While we expect guys like DJ to go out each week and be in contention, we don’t expect 24 year olds with no status on tour to come in and give him a run. The most impressive part is the fact that Will knew what he had to do to earn the exemption and it must have seemed like an unbelievable feat, especially given the conditions at TPC River Highlands.
The 24 year old former Vanderbilt star took full advantage though, with a strong performance on Thursday shooting 66, but I’m sure he was still thinking that wouldn’t be enough knowing there were guys coming in at 9 and 10 under on day one. Gordan, needing a finish in the top 3 to secure the pass next week to play in the Rocket Mortgage, came out on day 2 firing! Gordan shot a -8 62, sinking 266 feet of putts through the first two rounds!
Generally, we expect to see these younger guys light it up through the first few days and taper off over the weekend due to the pressure of being in contention for a PGA victory. Certainly it was looking like that was going to be the case after Saturday’s round. Gordan came in with a +1 round of 71 on Saturday that was nothing to write home about and Brendon Todd coming in to steal the show.
Here’s the thing about golf though, it only take ONE hole! Gordan had an absolute lights out round to finish the week Sunday shooting a 6 under round of 64 leaving him at 17 under with a real shot at finishing inside the top 3! As Gordon was on the interview stand hoping to hold onto a top 3 slot at Streelman, DJ, and Todd were completing their rounds, Todd has an absolute mess of a hole on 12 finishing with a TRIPLE moving him from second place at -18 all the way down to a tie for 6th at -15. It was truly painful to watch.
A disasterous 12th-hole for Brendan Todd, who triples and falls to -15 (T4)

That was all it took though, the former 2019 SEC player of the year did it. COLD AS ICE! With this Top three finish he earns the PGA special exemption next week in Detroit where he will look for a top-10 finish to secure unlimited sponsor exemptions for the rest of the season. Do we have another young gun in the making!? I love these stories!
